𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗔𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗔𝗩 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝘀
During summer 2026, several ANCONAV member companies welcomed Faculty of Naval Architecture students for internships and practical training: VARD Shipyards Romania (Brăila and Tulcea), Damen Shipyards Galati, ICEPRONAV ENGINEERING SRL, Marine Engineering Galati, Navrom Shipyard, DMT MARINE EQUIPMENT and GLO MARINE.
Founded in 1951 as the Naval-Mechanical Institute, the Faculty of Naval Architecture (FAN) of Universitatea „Dunărea de Jos” din Galați is the only faculty in Romania dedicated exclusively to education and research in naval architecture. FAN offers bachelor’s degree programmes in Naval Architecture, Naval Systems and Equipment, and Shipbuilding, Assembly and Repair Technologies, the latter delivered as a dual education programme. At master’s level, FAN offers the Naval Architecture programme, taught in English and forming part of EMship+ – the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in Advanced Design of Sustainable Ships and Offshore Structures – as well as the Modern Techniques in Shipbuilding programme, delivered in a dual education format. FAN also offers doctoral studies in Mechanical Engineering, with research focusing on hydrodynamics and naval structures.
Costel Ungureanu, Dean of the Faculty of Naval Architecture since 2024, said:
“The Faculty of Naval Architecture continues to build on Galați’s long-standing shipbuilding tradition. It is also where I completed my bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral studies, while hashtag#Galați is the city where I began my professional career as a naval architect at Ship Design Group, an hashtag#ANCONAV member company. Alongside my academic career, I spent more than a decade working as a marine surveyor for Bureau Veritas, a classification society that is also an hashtag#ANCONAV member. This combination of academic and professional experience has given me a valuable understanding of both perspectives: what our students need to learn and what the maritime industry expects from its future professionals.
One of my main commitments as Dean is to provide our students with a supportive learning environment that combines high-quality academic education with meaningful engagement with industry. The Vice-Dean, several members of our academic staff and I regularly attend hashtag#ANCONAV’s quarterly General Assembly meetings as guests. This continuous dialogue helps us remain connected to the sector’s evolving needs, strengthen our professional network and further develop cooperation between academia and industry.
ANCONAV member companies also contribute directly to our students’ professional development through internships, workshops, dedicated training programmes and joint initiatives. We greatly value this collaboration and are proud to count several hashtag#ANCONAV member companies among the faculty’s strategic partners.”
